“Well, miss... you did an excellent exam. There is one last question for the
thirty... Tell me about neurofibromatoses in general and tuberous sclerosis in
particular.” I hadn’t studied it, literally skipped it entirely, sure they wouldn’t
ask me about those few lines, written in small print at the bottom of a page.
A few years later, here is Benedetta and I had to learn those few lines the hard
way.
Writing about disability isn’t easy because you often stumble in trying to
tell a story that, all things considered, isn’t so bad; before getting to say this, you’ve
cursed the day of your own birth.
No one is born prepared to handle such an experience, not even a doctor.
You improvise, you try, you make mistakes, you struggle, you laugh, you cry, sometimes with happiness
for things so small that many don’t even notice. For me, they were big. So I
decided to tell about them.
