José Bleger (12/11/1922-20/06/1972), neurologist and psychoanalyst, lived in Argentina, raised in a lower-middle-class family composed of Jewish parents who immigrated from Russia.
At the beginning of the 1950s, he underwent his analytic training with Enrique Pichon-Rivière, of whom he would become one of the most important and recognized students. He was a member of both the Partido Comunista Ar-
gentino and the Asociación Psicoanalítica Argentina, experiencing intense conflicts with both institutions.
His thought expressed a complexity that found firm foundations, on the one hand, in the Marxian philosophy of dialectical materialism and, on the other, in Freudian psychoanalysis reworked starting
from the theory of object relations developed by Melanie Klein.
In his psychoanalytic research, he dealt with human behavior always understanding it, in all its possible manifestations, as a meaningful expression of the human being, deepening and developing peculiar intervention methods in group settings (using the Operative Group technique), institutional and community contexts (psychohygiene).
