The book tells the story of Léonie Martin, sister of Thérèse of Lisieux, and daughter of Zélie and Louis Martin – the first married couple proclaimed saints by Pope Francis in 2015 – through the 218 letters that Zélie wrote mainly to her brother and sister-in-law. This material represents the largest existing documentation, both on the difficult mother-daughter relationship and on the behavioral analyses that lead to the hypothesis of a neurodivergent condition. The essay, rich in reflective insights on to
pics little discussed in the field of autism, fits into pathography, which allows the reconstruction of the psychic pathologies of historical figures through biographical information and the examination of their works. Léonie, born on June 3, 1863, entered the Monastery of the Visitation in 1899, taking the name Sr. Françoise-Thérèse. She died on June 17, 1941. The diocesan process for her cause of beatification and canonization took place in the diocese of Bayeux-Lisieux from July 2, 2015 to February 22, 2020. She too, like Francisco Pascal, a Carmelite lay brother from the mid-sixteenth century, demonstrates that neurodivergence is an aspect of being that confronts us with our
insecurities. The beatification of both is the greatest recognition of equality among individuals, beyond the ways the brain functions.
