August Aichhorn (Vienna 1978-1949) is considered the pioneer of psychotherapeutic intervention applied to educational practices. Werwahloste Jugend, published in 1925 with a preface by Sigmund Freud, still represents a point of reference today for all those who
work in the field of youth distress, as Aichhorn offers a theoretical framework for the experiences he conducted with young people and adolescents with a difficult past, often marked by neglect, violence, and abandonment. Nearly a century later, Rossella Raimondo offers an anthology selection of the text in a new Italian translation. In the introduction, the editor reconstructs the genesis of the volume, placing it in the social, cultural, and psycho-pedagogical context of
Vienna in the 1920s, a lively center of debate and experimentation of that renewal involving the human sciences in the German-speaking area. The novelty of the therapeutic intervention carried out by the Austrian psychoanalyst in the two communities he
started and directed emerges, in which boys and girls between 15 and 20 years old with difficult backgrounds were put in a position to be recognized as people, potentially able to give new meaning to their lives.
