The volume Education to Reason, by Giovanni Maria Bertin, represents
one of the classics of twentieth-century Italian pedagogy.
Long meditated by its author, this work constitutes the
summa of Pedagogical Problematicism, one of the most vital
and original trends in contemporary pedagogy. Characterized by
a strong and coherent philosophical basis, of a critical and rationalist nature,
and by a marked attention to the concrete phenomenology of educational experience, Bertin's problematicism presents an organic solution to the relationship between theory and practice, demanding educational choices
distinguished simultaneously by fidelity to reason
and adherence to reality.
Written over fifty years ago, in 1968, in an era of
social and cultural crisis, this work offers a thought capable of interpreting crises in a realistic but not fatalistic way, and of developing their solutions according to the principle of reason.
A work as relevant as ever, therefore, for understanding the crisis of this historical phase and developing cultural and pedagogical responses to it.
GIOVANNI MARIA BERTIN (1912-2002), long-time professor of pedagogy at the University of Bologna, was one of the leading Italian scholars of the philosophy of education. Trained at the Milanese school of Antonio Banfi, he developed his critical rationalism in the pedagogical field in an original way.
His work is still a fundamental point of reference for many scholars.
